RFG Perspective: The two main drivers of data center transformation today are AI (primarily generative AI) and sustainability. Both shifts will have substantial effects on hardware acquisition strategy and data center design including requiring evolutionary operational metrics and added funding. GenAI capabilities will add huge costs across the categories of compute, storage, network, and power, necessitating IT executives understand and appropriately allocate limited resources to achieve business objectives.

IBM Storage Introduces its Diamondback Tape Library

Nov 14, 2022   //   by Jean S. Bozman   //   Blog  //  No Comments

In a world of dynamic computing and distributed data, it turns out that the tape marketplace – with a presence that is perhaps surprising to some industry observers – is not dead.
Worldwide data is growing rapidly – but not all of it needs to be viewed in real-time. Tape libraries give customers, data centers and cloud providers an option to store data off-line for later retrieval, as needed. Industry data shows that tape, as a storage category, is growing – especially for archiving infrequently accessed cold data, and as a less expensive alternative to higher-cost storage resources.

VMware’s Explore conference (Aug. 29 – Sept. 1, 2022) presented the company’s portfolio, which is centered on multi-cloud deployments of applications and data. Clearly, VMware has been preparing for a multi-cloud wave of adoption that it believes will broaden its reach in the multi-cloud adoption wave: including private clouds, public clouds, and hybrid clouds.

VMware’s key message: No matter what stage of multi-cloud deployment is underway at a given customer site, simplification for multi-cloud deployment and multi-cloud management is key to enterprise customer adoption.
